Providence Grove defeats Asheboro

Providence Grove hosted its annual “Dig Pink” event Wednesday as they faced off against the Asheboro Blue Comets.

Beginning first set were the Comets as they took the first point. The Patriots gained their first point before Asheboro retook the lead. Jade Thomas slammed down a kill to tie the set at 2 all. Providence Grove took their first lead of the night with a 4-1 run for a 6-3 advantage. A kill from Mary Cate Kovash cut the lead to two for the Comets at 4-6. The Patriots scored three straight points to push their lead out further, but a serving error on the Patriots gave Asheboro a free point. Thomas helped the Patriots to a six-point lead with another kill. Asheboro kept fighting as Briley Brewer served an ace to close the gap to three points. Asheboro trailed 12-17 when they came back and made it a 16-17 set. Back to back kills from Kaitlin Sexton and Jill Stern helped Providence Grove take a 21-17 lead. Tipping the ball over the net was Diamond  McDowell followed by an ace from Rachel Luna to give the Comets 20 points. Providence Grove held the Comets in the first set for a 25-20 set win.

Madelyn Grettler started the Patriots off with a kill in the second set as they took an early 2-0 lead. Asheboro came back fighting in the second set when they scored seven straight points. Leah Reid picked up a block and a tip, Brewer added two aces, and Chloe Smith added a tip to help the Comets during the run. Providence Grove gained two points before the Comets took control of the rest of the second set. Asheboro used a 14-0 run for a 23-4 lead midway through the second set. Kovash gained two tips, Luna and Reid both killed the ball, and Taylor Hildreth served an ace during the Comets’ run. Providence Grove went on a slight run as Raegan Koeing and Kenzie Staley both earned kills. Asheboro finished the second set with a 25-8 win.

Reid started the third set off with a block for the Comets. Asheboro took a 2-0 lead to start the third set, but Providence Grove squeezed in a point before Asheboro went up 4-1. The Patriots rallied back to take an 11-4 lead. Back to back kills from Diamond McDowell allowed the Comets to cut the lead to 6 points. Ireland Haga killed the ball over the net as she put the Patriots up 16-8. McDowell kept swinging as she picked up another kill for the Comets. A serving error on the Comets allowed the Patriots to take an 18-11 lead. Brewer and Reid were able to put the Comets back in the match as they made it a 15-18 set. Providence Grove led 24-17 when the Comets scored three straight points. The Patriots held the Comets in the third set for a 25-20 win.

In the fourth set, the Comets took the first point. Providence Grove scored their first point followed by a serving error. The Comets took an early 4-1 lead. A kill from Grettler made it a 2-4 set. Asheboro was able to hold a steady lead over the Patriots as they took a four-point lead. Providence Grove rallied to tied the game at nine all. Reid and Brewer helped give the lead back to the Comets as they made it a 13-11 set. Providence Grove did not give up as they fought back and tied the game once again. Both teams went back and forth as they stayed within one point of each other. Smith killed the ball to give Asheboro a three-point lead. The Patriots used a 4-0 run to take a 22-21 lead over the Blue Comets. Tipping the ball over the net was Kovash as she gave the Comets 23 points. Providence Grove took the fourth set 25-23.

Briley Brewer led the Blue Comets with 31 assists, 2 kills, and 7 digs, while Mary Cate Kovash finished with 14 kills, 1 block, and 3 digs.
