Randleman tops Asheboro

Asheboro and Randleman took a break from their conference baseball schedules for a cross county battle with each other. This was the first meeting these two and the first between Coach Brett Hoogkamp of Asheboro and Coach Jake Smith of Randleman. Before taking over the head coaching position at Asheboro, Coach Hoogkamp was an assistant at Randleman under Coach Smith.

Randleman opened the game with a double from Ramsey Petty in the top of the first, but was left stranded as Asheboro picked up back to back outs to end the inning. Austin Curry was the only Blue Comet to get on base in the bottom of the first as Randleman forced three straight outs to keep the score tied at 0. Chase Newby reached second on a double for the Tigers in the top of the second, but three straight outs by the Blue Comets left him stranded. Randleman forced the Blue Comets to go three up, three down in the bottom of the second, but Asheboro returned the favor in the top of the third as the Tigers went one, two, three. Curry and Parker Clayton made it on base for the Blue Comets in the bottom of the third after two outs, but Randleman picked up a strikeout to end the inning with the score still tied at 0.

The top of the fourth started out good for the Blue Comets as they forced two outs right away, but a hit from Newby and three straight walks by the Comets gave Randleman their first run of the night. Matt Kemp, Noah Strickland, and Zac Kemp drew the walks to score Newby. Mason Matthews put the Tigers up by three after a two-run RBI. Asheboro picked up the final out of the inning as the Tigers led 3-0. Asheboro continued to go scoreless as the Tigers forced them to go three up, three down in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams would end up going three up, three down in the fifth inning as Randleman still led 3-0.

Randleman continued to find ways to put runners on base in the top of the sixth as Newby and Matt Kemp each drew walks. After an out by the Blue Comets, Zac Kemp drew a walk to load the bases for the Tigers. An RBI single from Matthews brought Newby across the plate to score and give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Bailey Welch drew a walk that automatically scored Matt Kemp to put the Tigers ahead 5-0. The Comets got the second out of the inning followed by a error letting Petty get a double. The double by Petty scored Zac Kemp making this a 6-0 game for the Tigers. Koty Ransom and Gunnar Gant drew walks from the Comets to score Welch, putting the Tigers up 7-0. After a long inning the Comets finally got the third out of the inning. Randleman once again forced Asheboro to go three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth.

Matt Kemp opened the top of the seventh with a walk and was followed by a hit from Strickland and a walk by Welch to load the bases for the Tigers. The Comets got the first out of the inning with a strike out, Matthews picked up another RBI single to score Kemp make this an 8-0 game. Asheboro turned a double play to end the inning. Starting things off in the bottom of the seventh was Trevor Marsh as he hit a triple putting himself in scoring position. Levi Kinney drew a walk as Randleman got the first out of the inning. Marsh was able to score on the out to give the Blue Comets their first run of the game. Hunter Callicutt drew a walk to put another runner on base for the Comets, but both runners would be left stranded. Randleman ended the inning with a strikeout to claim an 8-1 victory over the Blue Comets.
