Revenge is sweet for Patriots

PAC-6 softball play continued Tuesday as the Providence Grove Patriots hosted the Eastern Randolph Wildcats. The last time these two teams met, the Lady Wildcats recorded a 10-0 win over the Patriots.

Eastern Randolph started the top of the first by putting their first two batters on base. Unfortunately, Providence Grove would pick up three straight outs to end the inning. In the bottom of the first, the Patriots picked up runs from Alli Young and Maddie Hunt after an RBI single from Emma Saunders. Three straight outs by the Wildcats would end the inning with the Patriots leading 2-0.

The second inning opened with an out by the Patriots followed by a double play from Kelsey Williams. Williams caught a hit from Brooklyn Rush before tagging the bag to get the runner at first out for out number three. It would be a short inning for the Patriots as well, as they saw three of the four batters pick up outs. After two complete, Providence Grove continued to lead 2-0. Both teams would once again go scoreless in the third innings.

Providence Grove forced the Wildcats to go scoreless for the third straight inning in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Young and Hunt got on base after an out by Tatum Smith. They would score on a triple from Anna Thomas to put the Patriots up by four runs. After an out by Saunders, the Patriots would load the bases before Williams’ hit was caught for out three. After four innings, the Patriots led 4-0.

Eastern Randolph finally brought a runner across the plate in the top of the fifth to cut the Patriots lead to three. Nicole Cox picked up a double to put a runner in scoring position. After the first out of the inning, Haley Kearns drew a walk as Lindsay Castlebury stepped to the plate. Castlebury picked up out number two, but scored Cox. Kaylee Carter picked up out three to end the inning. The Patriots were held scoreless in the bottom of the fifth and left three runners stranded. After five innings, Providence Grove led 4-1.

The Patriots would make quick work of the Wildcats in the top of the sixth as they forced them into a one, two, three, inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Providence Grove tacked on another run to their score. A double from Williams scored Sam Welch after an out by Logan Cockman to put the Patriots ahead 5-1. Eastern Randolph picked up back to back outs to end the inning.

The Wildcats loaded the bases quickly to start the top of the seventh and ended up picking up another run. Kearns picked up out number one, but scored Olivia Owens to cut the Patriots lead back to three. Back to back outs by the Wildcats would end the game with the Patriots earning a 5-2 win.
