The middle school volleyball season came to a close on Saturday as the final two teams battled it out for the tournament championship. The top-seeded RMS Lady Tigers faced off against the second-seeded SWRMS Lady Cougars. RMS (16-0) reached the finals by defeating NAMS in round one before taking down NERMS in the semifinals. SWRMS (13-3) had to go through SERMS and ATMS to advance to the final match of the season.

SWRMS got off to a strong start in the first set as they took an early 5-1 lead. The Lady Cougars continued to build on their lead and held a 9-3 advantage before a serving error gave the Tigers a free point. RMS used the free point to start a 6-0 run to tie the game at nine-all behind a pair of kills from Chloe Dixon and a block from Elizabeth York. SWRMS pulled ahead by two behind an ace from Molly Smith before a serving error cut the lead to one for the Tigers. After another serving error cut the lead to two for the Tigers, Mackenzie Roach picked up a pair of aces to tie the set at 13 all. From there the team traded points with the lead changing hands multiple times. A hit from Maddy Handy gave the Tigers a 16-15 lead before an ace from Cara Barker moments later gave the Tigers a 19-17 lead. The teams continued to trade points back and forth until RMS pulled ahead for a 26-24 set win.

The Lady Cougars started the second set the same way they started the first by taking a large lead over the Tigers. SWRMS built a 7-0 behind a strong serve from Madelyn Smith before a hit from Handy gave the Tigers their first point of the set. Dixon picked up a kill to cut the lead to five. The Tigers got the lead to four before a serving error allowed the Cougars to push the lead back out. RMS trailed 9-3 before going on a 5-0 run to cut the Cougars’ lead to one. SWRMS answered with a 5-1 run of their own to take a 14-9 advantage. The Cougars had an answer every time the Tigers threatened to make a run and never let them get closer than four. A kill from Dix cut the lead to 20-16 for the Tigers, but the Cougars used a 5-0 run to close out the set for a 25-16 win.

With the match tied at one set apiece, this one headed into a third and final set. SWRMS took the first point of the set, but it would the Tigers who built an early lead. A pair of aces from Roach gave the Tigers an early 5-1 lead before a serving error gave the Cougars their second point of the set. SWRMS added three more points to tie the set at five-all. Handy had a strong sequence for the Tigers as they surged ahead for a 9-5 lead. The Lady Cougars cut the lead to three on a serving error by the Tigers before trimming it to one moments later. A kill from Handy sparked the final run of the set as the Tigers closed the set with a 6-0 run for a 15-7 set win.

The Lady Tigers finish the season 17-0 and earn both the regular season championship as well as tournament championship.
