RMS, SWRMS split season opener

The RMS Tigers and the SWRMS Cougars met on Thursday for a middle school basketball doubleheader that opened the 2019-2020 season.

In game one, the SWRMS Cougars’ boys’ team staved off a late run by the Tigers for a 39-28 win. The Cougars opened the first quarter on a 16-1 run before a three closed the quarter for the Tigers. RMS outscored the Cougars 6-2 in the second quarter and trailed 18-10 at the half. The third quarter of play was evenly matched as both teams put in eight points with the Cougars still leading 26-18. SWRMS controlled the ball well in the fourth quarter and held on for the win.

Wesley Wilson and Nathan Ellis led the Cougars with 11 points each, while Marcus Robertson added nine points. Austin Harvell finished with six points for the Cougars. Greg Price paced the Tigers with 13 points, while Connor Cassidy finished with six points.

Game number two was a match between the girls that saw the Lady Tigers of RMS pick up a 39-25 win. RMS got off to a great start in the first quarter outscoring the Cougars 10-3. The continued their strong shooting night in the second quarter to take a 23-10 lead at the half. Both teams picked up six points in the third to leave the Tigers lead at seven. SWRMS found a rhythm in the final quarter and matched the Tigers almost bucket for bucket. RMS outscored the Cougars 10-9 in the final quarter to secure their win.

Audra Petty led the way for the Tigers with 11 points, while Chenleigh Robinson chipped in nine and Gracie Beane added six. SWRMS’ Caressa King led all scorers with 19 points, while Jordin George finished with five points.
