SAMS defeats SWRMS

Thursday afternoon the Comets of SAMS hosted the Cougars of SWRMS for a middle school matchup in basketball.

Starting the first quarter was Morgan Coward as she put the Comets on the board first. The Cougars quickly caught up as Caressa King made it a 4-2 game with back to back baskets. Salem Lee stepped to the free throw line as she drew the foul to add an extra point to the Comets total. Driving the ball all the way to the net was Autumn Jones as she made it a three-point game. Shooting from behind the arch was Kaylen Nance as she tied the game at 6 all. Ending the first quarter with a buzz beater three was Carleigh Whitson. At the end of the first quarter, SWRMS led 9-6.

Right away in the second quarter Nance opened it up with another three-pointer to tie the game. Leading the way for the Cougars was King as she scored three straight baskets. SWRMS took a 15-9 lead. Ending the second quarter on the foul line was Ky Perdue as she made one out of the two shots. At the half, the Cougars held a 15-10 lead.

King opened the third quarter as she extended the Cougars lead to seven points. SAMS was able to play as a team as they scored three baskets in a row. Scoring for the Comets were Perdue, Sarah Hildreth, and Lee. SAMS was able to tie the game at 17 apiece. SWRMS continued to push as Jones drained a three-pointer and Whitson added a basket. At the end of the third quarter, the Cougars held their lead at 21-17.

Starting the fourth quarter was Jones as she went in for a layup. Drawing a foul for the Comets was Hildreth as she made both with ease. Lee, Nance, and Perdue helped lead the Comets to their first lead of the night at 26-23. King found herself on the line as she made both of her foul shots. Going up for the three was Perdue as she swished it for the Comets. Whitson made back to back baskets as she tied the game at 29 all for the Cougars. With 10 seconds left Coward drew a foul. She was able to make both shots to give the Comets the lead. SAMS took down the Cougars 31-29.


Taking on the second game of the evening were the boys as they battled it out.

Beginning the first quarter were the Cougars as Nathan Ellis opened up with a three. Shortly after Hakemme Butler went for a layup to put the Comets on the board. Both teams’ defenses were able to hold each other as both teams went scoreless for the majority of the first quarter. Within the last minute of the quarter, Tanner Marsh and Butler led the way as they made it a 10-3 lead. SAMS led by seven at the end of the first quarter.

SAMS opened up the second quarter as they continued to extend their lead. Stepping up to the foul line was Butler as he added a point to the total. Swishing a three-pointer with ease was Marsh as he gave the Comets a 13 point lead. SAMS shot back to back threes as Kobe Sandoval made it a 19-3 game. SWRMS finished with back to back baskets by Tyler Parks and Adam Cole. At the half, SAMS led 20-7.

Stepping on up to the foul line to start the third quarter was Butler as he made one out of the two free shots. Butler was able to rebound the ball as he put up another basket. Standing under the basket for the Comets was Gage Miller as he made an easy shot using the backboard. Drawing a foul for the Cougars was Ellis as he made one free throw. Pulling up for the jump shot was Butler as he scored two baskets in a row for the Comets. Parks nailed a three-pointer as he gave SWRMS 11 points. Cole was able to cut the lead to 18 as he put up a basket. Butler ended the third quarter on the foul line as he made both shots. After three complete quarters, SAMS led 33-13.

The Comets finished strong in the fourth quarter as they only allowed the Cougars to score two baskets. Scoring the points for the Cougars was Harvel. SAMS started strong as they dribbled around the Cougars defense to score 5 buckets in a row. SAMS defeated the Cougars 44-18.
