Southwest defeats Trinity 3-1

Monday night the Southwestern Randolph Cougars hosted the Trinity Bulldogs for a non-conference match-up in volleyball. 

Southwestern Randolph started set one with a kill from Ashton Maness. Trinity came back to take a 5-4 lead as Gracie Ballard served an ace and Addison Parrish got a kill. The Cougars answered with a 4-0 scoring spree. Trinity came back within one point only to have the Cougars extend their lead back to five. Slamming a kill down the floor was Ballard as she cut the lead to three for the Bulldogs. Trinity’s defense allowed the Cougars to pull ahead 21-12. A back-row attack from Parrish finished out Trinity with 14 points. Southwestern Randolph finished out the first set 25-14. 

The Cougars took the first point in the second set but quickly allowed the Bulldogs to pull ahead for a 7-2 lead. A serving error on the Cougars gave Trinity a free point. Standing tall for a block was Payton Shiflet for Southwestern Randolph. Trinity was able to pull ahead 16-11. A kill from Ballard pushed the lead to six points. A serving error on the Bulldogs cut the lead to two making it a 19-17 game. Gaining a kill was Maddie Stevens as she also picked up a point giving Trinity a 22-12 lead. Southwestern Randolph finished with 18 points as Trinity took the second set 25-18. 

Starting strong in the third set were the Bulldogs as they quickly took a 3-0 lead. The Cougars got back to back points to bring the game within one point. Trinity pushed as Ballard kept swinging to give the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead. Southwestern Randolph picked up some momentum as Josie Allred caught a block that rallied into an 8-0 run. Also helping the Cougars was Shiflet as she served an ace. Trinity put up a fight as Stevens put down a kill and helped bring the game within one point. A serving error allowed Trinity to pull ahead 15-14. Maness went to work with a kill and also served an ace to help the Cougars take a 20-15 lead. Trinity finished with a 3-0 run but could not catch up to the Cougars. Southwestern Randolph took the third set 25-19 to go up 2 sets to 1.

Once again in the fourth set, the Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead. Southwestern Randolph picked up four points in a row as Maness and Kelsey Harvell got a kill. Trinity tied the game at 5 all. A tip from Peyton Shiflet allowed the Cougars to pull ahead 9-5. The Bulldogs squeezed in a point before the Cougars went ahead 14-6. Trinity let Southwestern Randolph take a 10 point lead before they closed the gap to 6. The Cougars led 24-16 as Anna Kate Schiebel sent a kill down in the back corner. The Bulldogs were able to push three before the Cougars scored their final point. Southwestern Randolph took set four 25-19.
