Southwestern Randolph defeats Asheboro

Wednesday night the Asheboro Blue Comets hosted the Southwestern Randolph Cougars in Mid-Piedmont Conference soccer action.

Leading things off with the first touch were the Cougars. Southwestern Randolph made their way down the field before the Comets stole the ball. Asheboro used good touches as they took the ball straight to the net for their first attempt at the goal. The attempt was saved as the Cougars kept the game tied at zero. Asheboro started strong as they maintained pressure on the ball. Southwestern Randolph’s goalie came out of the box for a penalty which gave the Comets a free-kick. Cristian Jaimes sent the kick into the back of the net giving the Comets a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Fernando Castro set up for a corner kick finding Kevin Ortiz for the header. Southwestern Randolph tied the game at one goal apiece. The Cougars found a rhythm on offense and began to push through the Comets’ defense. Castro found an opening and scored giving the Cougars their first lead of the night. The Cougars took a 2-1 lead. Both teams battled it out on the field going back and forth with several attempts at the goal, but neither team could score. At the half, the Cougars remained in front 2-1.

Beginning the second half were the Comets as they made the first touch on the ball. It did not take long for the Cougars to take possession of the ball and head towards the goal. Yodany Cuadros sent the ball passes the Comets’ keeper to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead. Less than a minute later, Castro made his way down the field as he fired another shot into the net giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead. Asheboro did not give up as they started to step to the ball more making the attempts at the goal. The Comets took some close shots but were unlucky. However, with eight minutes left in the game, Diego Valdes beat the Cougars’ defense for a Blue Comet goal. Southwestern Randolph would hold the Comets as they picked up a 4-2 victory.
