Southwestern Randolph defeats Asheboro

Friday night the Asheboro Lady Blue Comets hosted the Southwestern Randolph Lady Cougars in Mid-Piedmont Conference softball action.

With one out in the top of the first, Chelsey Auman began things with a double for the Cougars. Taking ball four was Heaven Maness as she put a runner into scoring position. The Comets got the second out of the inning before giving up an RBI single to Courtney Chriscoe that sent Auman home. Asheboro got out of the inning leaving two runners stranded. In the bottom of the first, Southwestern Randolph picked up two outs in a row before intentionally walking Sydney Cox. The Cougars ended the inning with the final out, leaving Cox on base. After one complete, Southwestern Randolph led 1-0.

Leading things off with a solo hit in the second was Gracie Ward. The Comets quickly picked up back to back outs. Alex Coleman added a base hit but would be left stranded as the Comets got the final out of the inning. Getting back to back walks for the Comets were Taylor Hildreth and Jenna Thompson. With one out, Tiffany Martindale loaded the bases with a solo hit. The Cougars got out of the inning with a strikeout leaving all runners on base. After two complete innings, the Cougars continued to lead 1-0.

Maness opened the top of the third with a triple off an error to put a runner in scoring position. Asheboro walked Hailee Cagle and Chriscoe intentionally to load the bases. With no outs, an RBI single brought in Maness before the Comets picked up a pair of outs. With two outs, Emily Johnson picked up an RBI single that sent Chriscoe home. Asheboro ended the inning as Southwestern Randolph led 3-0. In the bottom of the third, Emily LaClair took ball four. With one out Cox gained a base hit before an RBI single from Hildreth scored the Comets’ first run of the night. Southwestern Randolph would not let the Comets score again as they picked up the final two outs of the inning. After three complete innings, the Cougars led 3-1.

It was a quick fourth inning for both teams as they each were forced to go three up three down. In the top of the fifth, Asheboro gave up only one hit and it was a base hit to Chriscoe. Cox turned a double play as she got the Comets out of the inning. Southwestern Randolph forced the Comets into another quick three up three down inning in the bottom of the fifth. After five, the Lady Cougars continued to lead 3-1.

The Comets allowed a double to Haley Epps in the top of the sixth before Johnson slammed the ball into centerfield to score Epps and make it a 4-1 game. Southwestern Randolph would not score again as the Comets got themselves out of the inning. Asheboro struggled in the bottom of the inning as the Cougars forced them into another quick three out inning. After six complete innings, the Cougars led 4-1.

Maness led things off with a solo hit in the top of the seventh. With one out Cagle, Chriscoe, and Molly Strider loaded the bases with solo hits. Up next was Gracie Ward as she sent Cagle and Chriscoe home to give the Cougars a 6-1 lead. Asheboro was able to get out of the inning leaving two runners on base. Southwestern Randolph allowed Emma Haywood to lead things off with a double but the Cougars finished out the game with three outs. The Cougars defeated the Comets 6-1.

Courtney Chriscoe led the Cougars by going 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored, while Emily Johnson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Heaven Maness earned the pitching win after giving up one run on three hits, four walks, and striking out five in six innings of work. For the Comets, Taylor Hildreth and Emma Haywood picked up the only two hits of the night with Hildreth driving in the only run.
