Southwestern Randolph defeats Comets with PKs

Everyone knew this would be a tough game as the match-up between the Cougars and Asheboro always is. Both teams were evenly matched and played through a scoreless, hard-fought, first half. A win for Asheboro would get them closer to winning the conference or at least put them in contention for the honors but Southwestern Randolph had other thoughts.

On Southwestern Randolph’s Senior Night, the Cougars got on the board first as Yonathan Abonza passed a crisp ball across the front right side of the Asheboro goal to a sprinting Carlos Cuadros who popped it in the corner of the goal to go up 1-0. With time winding down in the second half Asheboro was awarded a free kick deep in Cougar territory from the right side which saw Asheboro’s, David Corona, send a ball into the middle goal area with the Comet’s Castro heading it in to tie things up.

Going into overtime, Asheboro’s was awarded a penalty kick off a Cougar foul in the box, which had Jovan Cotton finding the back of the net to put Asheboro up 2-1. Heading into the second overtime period, SWRs responded with a 20 yard free kick from Enrique Remerez to tie things up which lead to the night being decided on penalty kicks.

Asheboro missed one of their PKs resulting in Southwestern Randolph’s, Carlos Cuadros, taking the fifth and winning PK for the Cougars to give Southwestern Randolph the 3-2 win. Cuadros was heard saying, ” . . . he did it for his dad” who had recently passed away.

The Cougars (9-2) have one more game against Southeast Guilford tonight and hopes of a win to enter into a tie for the conference championship with Williams (10-2) who beat Southern Alamance last night 5-1. Asheboro closes out their season 9-3 and waits to find out who they will play in the first round of the State playoffs.
