Staker HR lifts Cougars over Comets

Tuesday night the Southwestern Randolph Cougars hosted the Asheboro Blue Comets for a matchup in baseball.

Defending home field in the top of the first with a one, two, three inning were the Cougars. In the bottom of the first, the Comets were able to go two for two. The Cougars put a runner on base but he was left stranded as the Comets picked up the final out of the inning.

Southwestern Randolph was able to continue their strong play as they forced the Comets into another three up three down inning. Leading things off in the bottom of the second was Blake Marsh as he was pitched ball four. Chris Hardin picked up a solo hit to add a second base runner for the Cougars. With two outs, Paxton Staker stepped to the plate for a three-run home run over the fence. The Cougars took a 3-0 lead. Parker LaPlant came up to bat for a base hit. Behind him was Carson Clapp as he slammed a double. With two outs, Caleb Clapp made contact for an RBI single that sent Carson Clapp and LaPlant home. Asheboro got out of the inning leaving two runners stranded.  After two complete innings, the Cougars led 5-0.

In the top of the third, the Cougars gave up back to back hits to Luke Bunting and Easton Price. Taking ball four was Alex Martinez. Trevor Marsh picked up an RBI single to send Bunting home. Southwestern Randolph finished the top of the third with a strikeout. Asheboro began the bottom of the third with an out right away before giving up a free base after hitting Hardin with a pitch. The Comets got out of the inning leaving the runner on base. After three complete, the Cougars led 5-1.

Starting the top of the fourth was Levi Kinney as he got a solo hit. Southwestern Randolph gained back to back outs before giving up a hit to Price. The Cougars finished out the inning leaving both runners stranded. In the bottom of the fourth Asheboro had an easy one, two, three inning.

Following in the Comets footsteps were the Cougars as they too were able to have a three up three down inning in the top of the fifth. Asheboro continued the cycle as they once again forced the Cougars to go three up three down in the bottom of the fifth.

Southwestern Randolph led things off with a strikeout in the top of the sixth before Marsh picked up a base hit for the Comets. Goldston drew a walk but was left stranded as the Cougars picked up back to back outs. Hardin led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo hit. With one out Powell and Garner gained back to back base hits. Loading the bases with a walk was LaPlant. Using smart base running Powell stole home to give the Cougars a 6-1 lead. With two outs, Clapp stepped to the plate as he slammed an RBI double. Southwestern Randolph took an 8-1 lead. After six complete innings, the Cougars led 8-1.

Southwestern Randolph finished out the game with three back to back outs. The Cougars defeated the Comets 8-1.
