SWRMS earns sweep over Uwharrie Ridge

Thursday afternoon the Lady Timberwolves of Uwharrie Ridge hosted the SWRMS Lady Cougars in middle school volleyball action. It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

Match 1

SWRMS opened the first set with an early 4-0 run behind a strong serve from Alyssa Harbor. Uwharrie Ridge broke the serve for their first point before a block from Addison Boyers gave them their second. The Lady Timberwolves added one more point to their total before a serving error gave a free point to the Lady Cougars. SWRMS maintained their lead for the next few minutes but the Lady Timberwolves made moves to stay close. An ace from Boyers cut the lead to two for the Timberwolves during a 4-0 run that helped Uwharrie Ridge tie the set at ten all. SWRMS pulled back in front with a 10-0 run behind a strong serving sequence from Molly Smith for a 20-10 advantage. Uwharrie Ridge tried to claw their way back but the Cougars’ lead was just too much to overcome. SWRMS took set one 25-16.

Uwharrie Ridge turned the tables by taking the first point of the second set, but the Cougars quickly tied the set at one all. A tip from Boyers put the Timberwolves in front 2-1 before a kill from Carleigh Whitson tied the game at 2-2 for the Cougars. It would be a back and forth contest for most of the set with neither team able to pull away early.  An ace from Carly Ward tied the set at six all for the Timberwolves before they added another point to take the lead. SWRMS responded with a 6-0 run behind a kill and three aces from Smith. A serving error ended the run by the Cougars and gave the Timberwolves a free point. The free point sparked a 6-0 run for the Timberwolves as they took a 13-12 lead. SWRMS caught fire late as they closed out the set with a 13-3 run for a 25-15 win.

The Lady Cougars took the first match two sets to none.

Match 2

The first set of the second match was a hard fought battle as their team could build a comfortable lead. SWRMS was the first on the board but the Timberwolves quickly tied the set at one all. A kill from Whitson and an ace from Raegan LeRoy put the Cougars in front 3-1. The largest lead of the set for either team was four as the Lady Cougars led 7-3 and then 10-6 midway through. A tip from Boyers and an ace from Alley Lowe pulled the Timberwolves within two before a serving error on the Cougars cut the lead to one. Once the Timberwolves tied the set at 13 all neither team could take a lead larger than one. After a hard fought few minutes, the Lady Cougars led 24-13 and looked to take the set before the Timberwolves tied the set at 24.  Uwharrie Ridge took a 25-24 lead off an ace from Micah Wilson for their last lead of the set. The teams traded points the rest of the set but it would be the Cougars who got the win 31-29.

SWRMS jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set before a serving error gave the Timberwolves their third point of the set. The Lady Cougars remained in control as they built a 10-6 lead. Uwharrie Ridge picked up a couple of points to cut the lead to three at 11-8. The Lady Timberwolves never quit as they trimmed the lead to two at 13-11 off an ace from Rylee Tucker. SWRMS answered with a 10-0 run to take a commanding 23-11 lead. Uwharrie Ridge added one more point before the Cougars took the set 25-12.

SWRMS won the match two sets to none.
