SWRMS knocks off ATMS to advance

The SWRMS Cougars faced off against the ATMS Bulldogs in the middle school baseball tournament semifinals on Thursday evening. SWRMS had to go through NAMS in the first round to advance, while the Bulldogs took down SERMS in round one for a spot in the semifinals.

 

Rylan Smith got things started for the Bulldogs with a deep shot to the outfield for a triple. Smith would be left stranded as the Cougars forced three straight outs to end the inning. The Bulldogs started strong in the bottom of the inning as they got two outs right away with no problem. Tyler Parks picked up a double for the Cougars to put a runner on base. A single from Blake Marsh brought Parks into score and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Marsh scored off a double from Landon Williamson to put SWRMS ahead 2-0. ATMS picked up the final out of the inning to keep the SWRMS lead from growing.

In the top of the second, the Cougars forced the Bulldogs into a one, two, three inning. SWRMS wasted no time putting runners on base in the bottom of the inning. Lane Dalke got things started with a single and after an out by the Bulldogs, Trip Mabe laid down a bunt to put runners in scoring position. Troy Fogleman sent a two-run double into the outfield to score Dalke and Mabe. A double from Easton Clap scored Fogleman and gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead. With two outs on the board, Marsh picked up a triple to score Clapp and make this a 6-0 game for the Cougars. ATMS got out the inning with the final out. After two complete, the Cougars led 6-0.

ATMS put runners on base quickly in the top of the third as Cameron Hinson singled and Ben Owens drew a walk. Smith stepped to the plate and hit a two-run double to cut the SWRMS lead to four. Smith would score moments later to cut the lead to three. ATMS did not stop there as they brought in two more runs. With two outs, Landon Mosley picked up a one-run double to make this a 4-6 game. The Bulldogs were knocking on the door as Zack Crites got a piece of the ball for a one-run single to send Gavin Dennis home making this a 5-6 game. SWRMS picked up the third out to end the inning. In the bottom of the third, Brody Trogdon started things out with a double for the Cougars. ATMS picked up the first out of the inning, but gave up a RBI single to Ethan Gravely that scored Trogdon. The Bulldogs got out of the inning with back to back outs. After three innings of play, SWRMS led 7-5.

SRWMS starts the top of the fourth with an out right away, but gave up a single to Owens. Rylan Smith picked up another double, this time scoring Owens to cut the lead back to one. With two outs on the board, Mosley drew a walk to put a second runner on base. Hunter Smith made contact with the ball to give Rylan Smith and Mosley enough time to score. SWRMS got the final out of the inning, but trailed 8-7. In the bottom of the fourth, Easton Clapp picked up a base hit to start things off. Parks tripled to bring in Clapp and tie the game at 8 all. Marsh added a triple for the Cougars to score Parks, giving the lead back to the Cougars. After four innings of play, the Cougars led the Bulldogs 9-8.

In the top of the fifth, Reigo Rodriguez got on base with a single. SWRMS picked up the first out of the inning, but allowed a RBI base hit to Hinson that score Rodriguez and tied the game at 9. ATMS put two more runners on base, but both were left stranded as the Cougars got the final out. Leading off for SWRMS in the bottom of the fifth was Gravely as he singled. Fogleman picked up a base hit that scored Gravely and gave the Cougars a 10-9 lead. With no outs, the Cougars picked up hits from Clapp and Parks to drive in a couple more runs. SWRMS led 12-9 before the Bulldogs got the first out of the inning. A double from Williamson put the Cougars ahead 14-9, just before Dalke picked up a RBI single to make it 15-9. ATMS ended the inning shortly thereafter.

ATMS looked to close the gap once more as Mosley slammed on over the outfield fence for a solo home run. The Cougars left two stranded as they ended the inning with three straight strikeouts. In the bottom of the sixth, Gravely and Mabe picked up back to back doubles that added a run to the Cougars lead. The Bulldogs picked up the first out of the inning, but gave up a base hit to Clapp. An error by the Bulldogs scored Mabe to put the Cougars ahead 17-10. Parks drew a walk to put a second runner on base for the Cougars. Clapp and Parks made their way around the bases to score and give the Cougars a 19-10 lead. ATMS got out of the inning moments later. In the top of the seventh, SWRMS forced the Bulldogs to go three up, three down. SWRMS picked up a 19-10 win and advances to play NERMS in the championship game.
