SWRMS opens season with win over SAMS

Monday afternoon the Comets of SAMS opened the 2019 baseball season as they hosted the Cougars of SWRMS.

Leading things off in the top of the first with a strikeout were the Comets. Adam Cole was the first on base for the Cougars with a hit. Tyler Parks brought in Cole with an RBI triple to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. After the second out by the Comets, Parks scored to put the Cougars in front 2-0. The Comets ended the top of the first with a strikeout. SWRMS started strong in the bottom of the inning as they forced the Comets into a quick one, two, three inning. After one complete inning, the Cougars led 2-0. 

SAMS began the top of the second with a quick out, but Eli Gravely slammed the ball for a base hit. The Comets turned a double play to get themselves got out of the inning. In the bottom of the second, C. Caviness and H. Ellis both drew walks to give the Comets a pair of base runners. SWRMS gained their first out with a strikeout. Caviness trimmed the lead to one after sliding into home plate for the Comets. M. Coward drew a walk to add another base runner before Ellis stole home to tie the game at 2 all. The Cougars got out of the inning with a strikeout. After two innings, the game was tied 2-2. 

Hagen Auman led things off in the top of the third with a base hit for the Cougars. The Comets picked up back to back outs but smart base running allowed Auman to score and give the lead back to the Cougars. SAMS got the final out to end the inning. In the bottom of the third, Tanner Marsh led things off with a base hit for the Comets. With one out, C. Adams picked up a base hit. The Cougars left both base runners on base as they got out of the inning with the final out. SWRMS led 3-2 after three innings.

SAMS started strong in the fourth inning picking up two outs in a row. Ryan Jones stepped in the batter box for a base hit into left field followed by an RBI double into center field from Gravely. SWRMS led 4-2. The Cougars forced the Comets to go three up three down in the bottom of the fourth. After four complete innings, SWRMS led 4-2.

In the top of the fifth, Auman picked up a base bit to open the innings for the Cougars. The Comets got the first out of the inning but Cole sent the ball into right field for an RBI base hit to send Auman home. With only one out, Parks gained an RBI single to score Cole and make it a 6-2 game. SAMS finished out the inning with two outs in a row. Leading things off in the bottom of the fifth was #0 as he took ball four. The Cougars got two outs in a row including a strikeout. #0 made his way around the bases as he scored for the Comets. SWRMS ended the inning with a groundout. 

The game was called due to darknes as SWRMS took down SAMS 6-3.
