SWRMS opens season with win

The middle school softball season kicked off on Thursday afternoon as the SWRMS Cougars hosted the SERMS Wildcats.

SERMS would take an early in the top of the first inning as Abbie Flinchom scored off a hit from Dori Hunter with one out on the board. Flinchom had doubled during her at bat. Hunter would be picked at third during the play. SWRMS go the final out of the inning to keep the game close. The Lady Cougars unleashed fury on the Wildcats as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first. Singles by Lexi Auman and Lindsey Auman gave the Cougars a pair of base runners early. A single from Molly Strider scored Lexi Auman and left runners on the corners. Lindsey Auman made her way home on a wild pitch by the Wildcats and Strider would score off a single from Alexis Manness.

The first out for the Cougars would come when Manness’ courtesy runner Kynley Brewer was picked off at second after a single from Caressa King. King would steal second and third on a pair of wild pitches by the SERMS’ pitcher. A single from Carley Everhart would score King, giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead. Lindsey Beck picked up a single to put runners at first and second before Caiden McDuffie drew a walk to load the bases. Everhart took advantage of a wild pitch and score the fifth run of the night for the Cougars. Carleigh Whitson’s single would advance Beck, but Beck would be picked off at home for out number two. McDuffie and Whitson would both score on a pair of wild pitches to give the Cougars a 7-1 lead. SERMS would get the final out of the inning moments later.

SERMS was forced to go three up, three down in the top of the second inning as they trailed 7-1. In the bottom of the second, Brewer would score for the Cougars on a wild pitch with two outs on the board. Everhart’s hit would be caught right after the score for the final out of the inning. After two complete innings, the Cougars were in control 8-1.

SWRMS got back to back outs against the Wildcats to start the third inning, but SERMS would put Zeri Waslon on base after a single. She would be picked off trying to steal second for the third out of the inning. Beck opened the bottom of the inning with a single for the Cougars. She would be out at second after a single from McDuffie. McDuffie was tagged at second for out number two after a single from Whitson. The Cougars received their third out because Whitson left the base too early. After three innings, the Cougars still led 8-1.

Both teams would go scoreless in the fourth inning of play. In the fifth inning, the Wildcats put two more runs on the board to cut in the Cougars’ lead. SERMS would load the bases quickly with their first three batters. A single from Ayanna Mers would score Lanie McDaiel to cut the lead to 8-2. After a strikeout, Waslon picked up a hit that would score Payton Hill. Walson would be out at first for the second out of the inning. The Cougars would catch the pop up by Charlise Phillips to end the inning. SWRMS would go scoreless in the bottom of the inning and leave two runners stranded.

Neither team could score in the sixth as the Wildcats were forced to go three up, three down once again. SERMS put together a couple of hits in the top of the seventh to try and comeback. They had two runners in scoring position with two outs on the board. The Cougars would pick up the final out before either runner could score. SWRMS got the win 8-3.
