SWRMS, SERMS split soccer doubleheader

It was a perfect afternoon for middle school soccer as the Wildcats of SERMS hosted the Cougars of SWRMS for a doubleheader. The girls kicked off the afternoon before the boys took the field to close out the day.

In game one the Lady Wildcats and the Lady Cougars battled it out, but it would be the Cougars who came away with the win. Both teams came out strong in the first half of play as they held each other scoreless for the first seventeen minutes of play. SWRMS took an early 1-0 lead off a goal from Sadie Mabe at the 13:28 mark. SERMS stepped up their defense to keep the Cougars scoreless until there was just one minute left on the clock. Macy Walker found the back of the net put the Cougars in front 2-0 by the end of the first half. SWRMS led 2-0 at halftime.

SERMS would not let the Cougars get the shutout as they scored during the first two minutes of the second half to cut the lead to one. Belinda Jaimes sent the ball into the back of the net on a penalty kick to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 28:10 mark. Four minutes later, the Cougars found an opening as Maggi Floyd scored to push the lead back to two. The Lady Cougars had several more great looks at the goal, but Wildcats’ keeper, Bailey Herring, was there for the save each time. She would finish the night with seven saves. SWRMS got the win 3-1 over SERMS.

In the boys game, the Wildcats got off to a great start score during the first minute before an offsides call was made erasing the goal. That did not stop the Wildcats as Axel Canela scored to put SERMS on the board first at the 26:31 mark. SWRMS tried to answer, but the Wildcats’ defense was too strong. SERMS kept the ball on their side of the field for most of the first half and worked the ball around trying to find an opening. Johnathan Perez beat his defender before sending the putting the ball into the far corner of the goal to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. SWRMS stepped up an held the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the half. The Cougars tried their best to get on the board before the end of the half, but they were unable to find the back of the net. At the half, SERMS led 2-0.

The Cougars came out strong in the second half of play both offensively and defensively as they held the Wildcats scoreless for most of the half while taking more touches with the ball. The second half was a back and forth battle for the first twenty-three minutes as neither team could score. SWRMS got a couple of good looks at the goal, but SERMS’ keeper was there for the save. The Wildcats would cap off their win with a goal another goal from Canela to take the game 3-0 over the Cougars.
