SWRMS tops NERMS for title

It was a cold and rainy afternoon as the SWRMS Cougars battled it out against the NERMS Huskies in the first annual middle school baseball tournament championship. The Cougars defeated NAMS and ATMS for a spot in the title game, while the Huskies went through UMS and RMS.

Both defenses came to play as they neither team could score during the first two innings. SWRMS would go three up, three down during the bottom of the first and second innings, while the Huskies went three up, three down in the top of the second.

NERMS would be the one to break the 0-0 tie in the top of the third as they brought a single run across the plate. SWRMS opened the inning with an out, but gave up a base hit to Nathan Humble. Blake Marsh struck out Luke Thomas for out number two, but a wild pitch moments later allowed enough time to score. The Cougars would pick up the final out of the inning seconds later. SWRMS responded in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at one all. Lane Dalke singled to right, followed by a single Ethan Gravely. Trip Mabe laid down a perfect bunt that scored Dalke. NERMS turned a double play on a hit by Troy Fogleman and then picked off East Clapp on his way to first.

SWRMS allowed the Huskies a single base runner in the top of the fourth as they ended the inning quickly. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars tacked on another run to take their first lead of the night. SWRMS has runners on second and third as Landon Williamson singled to score Tyler Parks. NERMS would end the inning with three straight outs including back to back strikeouts by Thomas. After four innings, the Cougars led 2-1.

NERMS would be forced to go three up, three down in the top of the fifth. SWRMS put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the inning, but another double play by the Huskies ended things early. The Huskies had a quick top of the sixth as they only got one runner on base. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars brought in two more runs to put some separation between themselves and the Huskies. With a runner on second and one out, Brody Trogdon reached second base to put two runners in scoring position for the Cougars. NERMS picked up out number two as Gravely stepped to the plate. He hit one deep to score Marsh and Trogdon, but he was picked off on his way to second for the final out of the inning. With six complete, the Cougars led 4-1.

SWRMS secured their win in the top of the seventh as they forced the Huskies to go three up, three down. Blake Marsh got the pitching win for the Cougars after giving up just one run and striking out 12 batters. The Cougars finish the season with a 16-1 overall record.
