SWRMS tops NERMS to advance to final

The semifinals of the middle school baseball tournament got underway on Thursday at New Market Civitan Park. The second seeded NERMS Huskies face off against the SWRMS Cougars in the first semifinal of the day.

NERMS started the game with back to back outs before allowing the Cougars to load the bases. Tyler Parks tripled to right first for the Cougars first base runner. Ethan Gravely drew a walk and Landon Williams was hit by pitch to load the bases. Easton Clapp would fly out to center for the final out and leave all three runners stranded. Luke Thomas led things off for the Huskies in the bottom of the inning with a triple to center. The Cougars would pull off a double play after catching Makayla McClain’s hit and getting Thomas out at third. Joseph Coltrane drew a walk to give the Huskie another base runner. Zander Smith would single to short to add a second runner. Andrew Canter picked up a base hit, but Coltrane would be thrown out at third for the final out. After one complete inning, the score was tied 0-0.

Adam Cole kicked off the second inning with a double to center for the Cougars. NERMS would leave Cole stranded as they got three outs in a row. The bottom of the second was a quick one as Ethan Gravely struck out three straight batters for a three up, three down inning. The score was still tied 0-0 after two innings.

The Huskies got a quick out to start the top of the third before Parks stepped to the plate.  Parks sent one over the right field fence for a solo home run to break the 0-0 tie. Gravely would double to left, but he would be left stranded as the Huskies got back to back outs. SWRMS got a quick out to start the bottom of the third before giving up a single to Thomas and a walk to McClain. Gravely struck out the next two batters to leave both runners stranded and end the inning. After three complete innings, SWRMS led 1-0.

SWRMS would have a great fourth inning as they brought five more runs across the plate. Cole got things started with a walk before the Huskies got the first out of the inning. Brody Beason singled to put runners on first and third as Bryson Reid stepped to the plate. Reid would draw a walk to load the bases for the Cougars. A single from Luke White scored Cole and Beason to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Parks would get his third hit of the night to reload the bases.

Reid would score on a single from Gravely. Williams flew out to left for out number two but managed to still bring in White for the score. Parks would score off a single from Clapp as he beat the throw to first. NERMS would get themselves out of the inning with out number three.  NERMS could not get anything going in the bottom of the inning as their lone base runner was left stranded. After four innings, SWRMS led 6-0.

Beason would be the lone base runner for the Cougars in the top of the fifth as he was left stranded. NERMS finally had a breakthrough in the bottom of the fifth as Thomas was able to steal home on a wild pitch. After back to back outs to end the inning, SWRMS led 6-1 heading into the sixth.

Parks picked up his fourth hit and second triple of the night to start the top of the sixth inning. Gravely would be hit by a pitch to add a second base runner for the Cougars. Williams would fly out to right four out number one and would score Parks in the process. NERMS would get back to back outs to end the inning. SWRMS allowed Smith to reach first before getting three straight outs to end the inning. SWRMS led 7-1 after six innings.

The top of the seventh saw the Cougars push their lead to 9-1 after adding two more runs. Beason would score the first run of the inning off a hit from White after he was thrown out at first. Parks would double to center to score Reid and give the Cougars a 9-1 lead. NERMS would get the final out of the inning. SWRMS started the bottom of the with back to back outs before giving up singles to Thomas and McClain. Both runners would be left stranded as the Cougars got the final out of the inning and won the game 9-1.

Ethan Gravely got the win on the mound for the Cougars. SWRMS will face the winner of ATMS and RMS. The second semifinal was delayed due to rain and will played Friday at 4:30PM.
