Then there was one…

And then there was one… That is how Saturday ended for the Randolph County teams in the state volleyball playoffs as the Wheatmore Warriors were the only team to advance to the second round of play.

Wheatmore posted a 3-0 straight set victory over Wallace-Rose Hill on Saturday afternoon to advance in the 2A state tournament. The Warriors picked up set wins of 25-12, 25-9, and 25-12. Carson Elliott led the way with 10 kills, 19 service points, 5 aces, and 6 digs. Senior Krista Tuggle dished out 29 assists, 10 service points, and 5 digs. Hope Turbyfill picked up 7 kills, 11 service points, and 8 digs. The Warriors are now 25-0 on the season.

In other 2A action…

The Trinity Bulldogs fell 3-0 on the road at Currituck County. Trinity dropped sets of 25-13, 25-10, and 25-13.

Providence Grove dropped a competitive 3-1 match to the J.F. Webb Warriors Saturday. The Patriots took the first set 25-22, but dropped the next three 23-25, 24-26, and 23-25.

Randleman went on the road to Midway and fell 3-0. Midway won with set wins of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-17.

In 3A action…

The Asheboro Blue Comets lost a hard-fought battle against MPC foe Southeast Guilford in five sets. Asheboro dropped the first two sets 24-26 and 25-27, before winning the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-23. The Comets would fall 8-15 in the fifth and final set. Megan Banker and Mary Cate Kovash each finished with 14 kills, while Kesley Nance and Sammi Underwood dished out a combined 41 assists. Asheboro finishes the season 20-5.

The Southwestern Randolph Cougars fell in their first-round match-up to J.H. Rose on the road. Southwestern Randolph fell by set wins of 11-25, 10-25, and 20-25.
