Trinity battles back to top Patriots

Thursday night the Providence Grove Patriots hosted the Trinity Bulldogs for a PAC-7 Conference match up in volleyball.

Leading things off in the first set were the Bulldogs as they took a 2-0 lead. Providence Grove gained their first point off of a Trinity serving error. Leading the Patriots to a 5-3 lead was Kaitlin Sexton as she served an ace and picked up a kill. Maddie Stevens led the Bulldog charge as they battled back to take an 11-9 lead over the Patriots. Both teams stayed on their toes a they tied the game at 13 all. Slamming the kill down was Gracie Ballard giving the Bulldogs a 17-14 lead. Providence Grove kept pushing as Jill Stern sent the ball over the net for a kill tying the set at 18 all. The Patriots went on a 3-0 run to take the lead, but Trinity pulled ahead 23-22 off of a kill from Stevens. The Patriots stayed on their toes and came back to take the first set 25-23.

Opening the second set were the Bulldogs as they once again took a 2-0 lead. A back-row attack from Stern allowed the Patriots to tie the set. The Bulldogs surged ahead for an 11-8 lead before an ace from Stern cut the lead down to one for the Patriots. Returning the favor for the Bulldogs was Ballard as she helped the Trinity lead grow to 15-10. Scoring on another back-row attack was Stern as Sexton stood tall for a block. Trinity withstood a late push by the Patriots for a 25-14 set two win.

Killing the ball for the Bulldogs to start the third set was Ballard. A serving error on Trinity allowed the Patriots to tie the game. Ballard took over the serving duties for the Bulldogs leading them to a 6-2 advantage. Due to a serving error, the Patriots picked up a free point. Continuing to lead the Bulldogs was Ballard as she made it a six-point set. A kill from Sexton started a 3-0 run for the Patriots as they closed the gap. Trinity was able to pull ahead 19-15 before the Patriots came back and tied the set. With the match was tied at 21 all, a serving error allowed the Patriots to pull ahead 23-21. The Bulldogs rallied after a couple of aces from Ballard to steal the win. Trinity took set three 25-23.

Beginning the fourth set strong were the Bulldogs as they took a 5-0 lead. Providence Grove slipped in a point before Trinity pushed the lead back to five. Killing the ball across the net was Sexton as she cut the lead to four for the Patriots. Ballard led the way with another kill giving Trinity an 8-3 lead. Rylie Burton served an ace as she closed the gap to one point for the Patriots. Addison Parrish killed the ball pushing the Bulldogs’ lead back to five. A block from Sexton finished Providence Grove with 17 points. Trinity held the Patriots for a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Trinity took the match three sets to one.
