UMS crowned tourney champs!

The middle school softball season concluded on Thursday as the UMS Timberwolves faced off against the SERMS Wildcats in the tournament championship game. The Timberwolves defeated NERMS in the semifinals to advance, while SERMS knocked off top seed SWRMS.

UMS’s defense came ready to play as they forced the Wildcats to go three up, three down in the top of the first inning. The Timberwolves got the bats going in the bottom of the inning as they brought four runs across the plate. Alley Lowe picked up a single and Kelsey Payne followed her with a bunt to reach second. A deep triple from Tia Lunsford brought the first two runs in for the Timberwolves. Carmen Minton singled to score Lunsford, but Minton would out at second moments later on a hit from Maddie Duvall. After the Wildcats picked up out number two, Duvall would score on an overthrown ball to give UMS a 4-0 lead. UMS would leave one runner stranded as the Wildcats picked up the final out of the inning.

Neither team would score during the second and third innings of play. The Timberwolves left three runners stranded in the bottom of the second and forced the Wildcats to go three up, three down in the top of third.

SERMS got a spark in the top of the fourth as Zeri Watson hit one deep into the outfield for a triple. She would score off a single from Addie Flinchum to put the Wildcats on the board. UMS would pick up three straight outs including back to back strikeouts by Madison Varner to end the inning. The Timberwolves went to work in the bottom of the fourth bringing five runs across the plate. With one out on the board, the Timberwolves had the bases loaded as Lunsford stepped to the plate. She singled to center to score Leah Hughes and Lowe, giving the Timberwolves a 6-1 lead. A deep triple from Minton would bring in Payne and Lunsford. Minton would score on an over thrown ball on the same play to put the Timberwolves up 9-1. SERMS closed out the inning with back to back outs.

The Wildcats could not bring any runners across the plate in the top of the fifth as they left one runner stranded. In the bottom of the inning, Emma Snow would open things up for the Timberwolves with a single to left field. Hughes bunted to move Snow, but Hughes would be thrown out at first. A deep triple from Kassidy Glasgow scored Snow moments later. Glasgow tried to make it home after a wild throw, but she would be tagged out at home. SERMS would end the inning moments later. After five innings, the Timberwolves led 10-1.

Watson was the only Wildcat to get on base in the top of the sixth and she was left stranded as the Timberwolves picked up back to back outs. UMS need just one batter in the bottom of the sixth to end this one early. Lunsford stepped to the plate and hit the ball deep into the outfield. She turned on the jets as she was rounding the bases and made it all the way to put the Timberwolves up 11-1 and give them the win over SERMS. Madison Varner got the pitching win for the Timberwolves after striking out five batters.
