Uwharrie takes down NAMS

Tuesday night the Lady Comets of NAMS hosted the Uwharrie Ridge Lady Timberwolves for a middle school matchup in volleyball.

Match 1

Micah Wilson opened the first set with an ace to give the Lady Timberwolves an early 2-0 lead. NAMS gained their first point followed by a serving error. Uwharrie pushed ahead 4-1. Nubia Terry added another point to the Comets’ score with a kill. NAMS came back to tie the set at six-all. The Timberwolves went on a 5-0 run which included another ace from Wilson. Closing the gap to one point was the Comets. Macey Spangler picked up a hit to put the Timberwolves in front 11-9. Carly Ward served three aces in a row and Spangler picked up a kill for the Timberwolves. Both teams served back to back errors to give the other a free point. Celeste Gutierrez and Shakty Oliver gained back to back hits for the Comets to trim the lead to 19-13. Uwharrie Ridge went on to take the first set 25-22.

Opening the second set of the night was Addison Boyers as she killed the ball over the net. Rylee Tucker led the way in aces as she gave the Timberwolves a 4-0 lead. A serving error on the Timberwolves allowed the Comets their first point. Tipping the ball over the net for a point was Tucker. Digging the ball for the Comets was Natasha Mederes as she made it a 2-6 match. Uwharrie extended their lead to 7 points. Serving back to back aces for NAMS was Mederes and Gutierrez picked up a hit. NAMS came back as they made it a 9-11 game. The Timberwolves went on a 3-0 run to give themselves 14 points. A serving error on the Timberwolves gave the Comets 11 points. Gaining an ace was Alley Lowe as Uwharrie pulled ahead for a 20-12 lead. NAMS used a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 22-20 late in the set. Uwharrie held off the Comets for a 25-22 set win.

Match 2

Starting the second match of the night were the Comets as they took a 3-0 lead. Melanie Hernandez served an ace for NAMS. The Timberwolves gained their first point off a serving error by the Comets. Killing the ball across the net was Mederes as she made it a 6-3 set. Uwharrie rallied, tying the set at nine-all before taking a two-point lead off a kill from Wilson. NAMS responded with a 5-0 run to take a six-point lead. The Lady Timberwolves pulled themselves closer to the Comets with a pair of kills from Tucker and Boyers. Both teams fought hard as they tied the game at 20 all. Tipping the ball and picking up a kill was Tucker as she gave Uwharrie 20 points. A serving error on the Timberwolves gave the Comets a free point. The Comets returned the favor as they gave the win to Uwharrie. The Timberwolves took the first set 25-22.

NAMS opened the second set with the first point and shortly thereafter the Timberwolves made the board also. Tucker led the way in serves as she gave Uwharrie a 4-1 lead. Moments later, a hit from Boyers gave Uwharrie 10 points. Standing tall for a block was Madalyn Small as the Timberwolves led 11-4. NAMS allowed Uwharrie to take a ten point lead. The Comets picked up a free point off a serving error by the Timberwolves. Serving the way in aces was Wilson as she made it a 20-5 game. NAMS kept fighting as they scored back to back to give themselves 16 points. An ace from Tucker gave the win to the Timberwolves as they took the second set 25-16.
