Wildcats fall in Copperhead Classic opener

Wednesday afternoon the Eastern Randolph Wildcats played against the RJ Reynolds Demons as part of the Copperhead Classic at McCrary Park. The Wildcats entered the game 6-11 overall on the season.

Eastern Randolph led things off in the top of the first with an out. The Wildcats gave up a walk to the Demons but left the runner on base as they picked up the final two outs of the inning. In the bottom of the first, the Wildcats were forced to go three up three down. After one complete inning, this remained tied at zero.

In the top of the second, the Wildcats gave up another free base after hitting a batter with a pitch. Eastern Randolph turned a double play to get out of the inning. Eric Cheek began the bottom of the second with a solo hit. The Demons turned a double play as they too got out of the inning leaving one runner stranded. This one was still tied at zero after two innings.

Eastern Randolph gave up back to back base hits before picking off the lead runner for out number one. The Wildcats turned up their defense picking up back to back outs to end the inning. In the bottom of the third RJ Reynolds picked up two outs in a row before giving up a walk to Avery Jones. The Demons’ ended the bottom of the third with a strikeout. After three complete innings, the score remained 0-0. 

A couple of quick hits by the Demons put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs on the board. The Wildcats picked up two outs before an RBI single brought in two runs for the Demons. The Wildcats got out of the inning with the last out. Nate Canter gave the Wildcats a start in the bottom of fourth with a solo hit. Nyk Foland took ball four but was left on base as RJ Reynolds got out of the inning. After four complete innings, the Demons led 2-0. 

In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats got back to back outs. Due to an error, RJ Reynolds picked up a double to put a runner in scoring position. The Wildcats gave up a walk before giving up an RBI triple that added two more runs to the Demons’ total. Eastern Randolph was able to finish the inning with the final out. Christian Moon started the top of the fifth by being hit with a pitch. The Demons gained back to back outs but Moon was sent home as the pitcher was not set. After five complete innings, the RJ Reynolds led 4-1. 

In the top of the sixth, Eastern Randolph allowed only one hit and left the runner stranded. In the bottom of the sixth, the Demons forced the Wildcats into a quick three up three down inning. Eastern Randolph continued to trail 4-1 after six innings.

RJ Reynolds got the bats going in the top of the seventh as they brought in six more runs. The Demons loaded the bases with one out before an RBI single brought in one run. The Wildcats gave up three straight RBIs as the Demons took a 10-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Cheek began the Wildcats with a solo hit. Colton Craven took ball four as he was walked. RJ Reynolds turned a double play to end the inning. The Demons ended the game as they took a 10-1 victory.
