Wildcats roll to win over Blue Comets

A rivalry was renewed Friday night as the Eastern Randolph Wildcats hosted the Asheboro Blue Comets in non-conference football action. Eastern Randolph entered Friday’s game 3-0 on the season, while Asheboro was still searching for their first win of the season at 0-3.

Asheboro received the ball to start the game, but they would not hold on to it long. Kaemen Marley picked off a pass from Asheboro’s Corey Durrant and ran the ball down to the Blue Comets two-yard line. Jordan Terrell took the handoff and ran the two yards in for the score with 10:42 left in the first quarter. The extra point by Javier Dominguez was good as the Wildcats took a 7-0 lead. Less than a minute later, the Asheboro Blue Comets put their first touchdown on the board as Durrant connected with Nate Fisher for a 70-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good as this one was tied 7-7 with 9:56 left in the quarter.

The rest of the first quarter would be a high scoring affair as the Wildcats added three more touchdowns and the Blue Comets added one. Cade Snotherly found Marley for a 39-yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave the Blue Comets a 14-7 lead. A fumble by the Blue Comets was recovered by the Wildcats. ER had the ball on third down when Snotherly found Zion Warner for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Eastern Randolph led 21-7 after the extra point. Asheboro struggled on their next possession and was forced to punt on fourth down. The Wildcats capitalized on the Blue Comet turnover and eventually scored their fourth touchdown of the first quarter. Cam Glover scored on a two-yard run to give the Wildcats a 28-7 lead. Asheboro broke their scoreless streak after Fisher returned the kickoff 94-yards in for the score. The first quarter would end with the Wildcats holding a 28-14 advantage.

Asheboro had the ball to start the second quarter of play but ended up turning the ball over on fourth down. Eastern Randolph was forced into a punting situation on their next possession, but a fake punt attempt saw Marley run 72-yards into the end zone. The touchdown was brought back after a penalty was called on the Wildcats. Asheboro got things going on their next possession as they capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

It would be all Eastern Randolph the rest of the quarter as they scored twice in a two-minute span. Tavis McAdoo scored on a 43-yard run with just under two minutes left in the second quarter. Eastern Randolph led 35-21. Asheboro fumbled the ball with 25.4 seconds left and the Wildcats recovered. Eastern Randolph took it down to the wire as Snotherly connected with Marley for an eight-yard touchdown to close out the first half. At halftime, Eastern Randolph led Asheboro 42-21.

Eastern Randolph turned things up a notch in the second half. The Wildcats opened the third quarter with a four-yard rushing touchdown from Terrell for a 49-21 lead. Cam Glover made it 56-21 with a nine-yard rushing touchdown with about six minutes left in the quarter. The Wildcats put the game out of reach when McAdoo scored on an 82-yard run to put Eastern Randolph in front 63-21. The Wildcats led 63-21 at the end of the third quarter.

Asheboro ended the Wildcats scoring streak at the start of the fourth quarter when Cheek scored on a two-yard run. The Blue Comets trailed 63-28 after the made extra point attempt. The game was quite scoring wise during the next six minutes until the Wildcats put the exclamation point on the game. Warner capped off the game with a 22-yard rushing touchdown to give the Wildcats a 69-28 advantage. Eastern Randolph refused to take the extra point attempt and the Blue Comets took over after the ensuing kickoff. Asheboro made one last push down the field, but there was just not enough time to overcome the huge deficit. Eastern Randolph had their way with the Blue Comets as they grabbed a 69-28 win.
