Cougars rally to top Wildcats

Middle school softball action came to SWRMS on Tuesday as the Lady Cougars hosted the Lady Wildcats of SERMS.

SWRMS opened up the first inning with an out right away before giving up a base hit to Mears. Watson picked up a base hit, but the Cougar got out number two when they picked off Mears on her way to second. Hill was thrown out at first for the final out leaving one runner stranded. Madelyn Smith led off the bottom of the inning with a single for the Cougars. SERMS pitcher Addie Flinchum struck out the next batter for out number one. A base hit from Kamern Dunn pit runners on first and second before Flinchum stuck out another batter for out number two. Both Smith and Dunn would be left stranded as the Wildcats picked up the final out of the inning. After one complete inning, this was still tied at zero.

Logan Beaver drew a walk to start the top of the second for the Wildcats. Witaker laid down a bunt and was thrown out at first for out number one, but moved Beaver into scoring position. A base hit from Ammen set Beaver up to score, but she was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning. Ammen was left stranded as the Cougars got the final out of the inning. The Cougars picked up back to back base hits from Sammie Parks and Zoey Hammer before Parks was thrown out at second for out number one. SERMS picked up out number two before giving up a walk to Maddie Strider. Two runners were left stranded as the Wildcats got out number three with the game still tied at zero.

SERMS got off to a hot start in the top of the third with a base hit from Hass. She would score moments later on a deep triple from Flinchum. Mears was thrown out at first for out number one but gave Flinchum enough time to score from third. The Cougars picked up out number two before Hill reached first on a single. Hill was left stranded as the Cougar grabbed out number three. It was a quick bottom of the third as the Wildcats forced the Cougars to go three up, three down. After three innings of play, SERMS led 2-0.

The Lady Cougars started the top of the fourth with two straight outs before giving up a base hit to Corea. The runner was left on base as the Cougars earned the final out of the inning. SERMS continued their strong defense as they force the Cougars into another three up, three down inning. SERMS continued to lead 2-0 after four innings of play.

After a quick out to start the top of the fifth, Mears responded with a triple to the left-field fence. She tagged up on a caught hit from Watson to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with two outs on the board. Hill and Beaver picked up back to back base hits before a single from Witaker brought Hill in for the score. With runners on the corners, Ammen singled to score both of them giving the Wildcats a 6-0 lead. SWRMS stuck out the next batter for the final out of the inning. It was a tough bottom of the fifth for the Lady Cougars as they got just one runner on base in four at-bats. After five innings, the Lady Wildcats were in front 6-0.

SWRMS turned up their defense in the top of the sixth inning forcing the Wildcats to go in order with three quick outs. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars opened with three straight walks to load the bases. A base hit from Parks scored Dunn to put the Cougars on the board. Lindsey Beck and Macie Crutchfield both scored on a single from Hammer before a triple from Alyssa Harris scored brought in two more runs. Another walk put runners on the Cougars as Smith stepped to the plate. She laid down the bunt, but the runner at third was thrown out on her way home. Lillian Payne brought Strider in to score and tie the game at 6 all. Dunn’s hit was caught for out number two, but the play gave Smith just enough time to score and give the Cougars a 7-6 lead. SERMS ended the inning with the final out. After six innings, SWRMS battled back to take a 7-6 lead over SERMS.

The Cougar went to work int he top of the seventh as Crutchfield struck out the first two batters of the inning. SWRMS made it a quick inning as they threw Beaver out at first for the final out the inning. The Cougars got the win 7-6.
